Staffy skin problem, any ideas?
My first thought when I hear about a skin/coat issue is always food allergy. Re-evaluate what you're feeding and switch (gradually of course) to a higher quality food or raw diet if necessary.

Could be a food allergy or could be sebaceous adenitis. I have pages on my website about food allergies as well as sebaceous adenitis. Check them out, they might help.

Reply:My son has a staffy that had the same problem as a young dog. He had mange (the staffy not my son). He had all the symptoms and treatments you described and eventually grew out of it. I say it's mange. Good Luck
Reply:Just some simple things around the house can contribute to skin irritations. 1. Check the food you're feeding him, switch to a premium dog food if he's not already on one. INova, Nutro, Royal Canin (just to name a few). Make sure protein is the first ingredient NOT a by product. ALSO fillers should NOT be corn or barley - but wheat or rice. Now here's the tricky part - for healthy skin and coat make sure there is NO wheat in the food. A Lamb and Rice formula is ideal.

2. Bathe him (per your vets instructions) at least once a month. And though he has short hair he should be brushed everyday. This will help with creating healthy skin oils and spreading them around his body which will help w/ the dry skin.

3. While he has problems use a medicated shampoo. I use Tegrin (a dandruff shampoo - not head and shoulder) which is found in my local grocery store. She used to break out in hot spots, and lose hair constantly with bad allergies. Only use th Tegrin when symptoms are present. Once they have disapated you can maintain healthy skin and coat w/ an oatmeal based shampoo AND conditioner.

4. There are additives you can use in your dog's pet food. One of which I use frequently called Linetone. There are different formulas to fit specific needs - dry skin, allergies, etc. You can also use Fish oil or olive oil. Just like in our bodies these products contain omega 3 and amino acids that promote healthy skin and hair.

5. As for the ears - I've used on my girl 50% white vinegar and 50% rubbing alcohol. It's ideal for swimmer's ear which is a bacterial infection. It will disinfect and kill whatever is living in there. If he has chronic infections you may want to use every day.

6. Check around your house for other irritants - are you cleaning with a certain kind of cleaner? Do you use pet deodorizers on your carpet? Do you fertilize your garden or use pesticides? It could even be the cologne/ perfume you wear.

These are a few things I know helped my dog tremendously.

Good Luck
Reply:sorry to here about your dog. why don't you try and give him some 'Grafite 6c' you can get them at a health shop in small click tubes or some chemists will stock it. these help to cool the blood which in turn may ease his itch and scratch cycle. hope that may help you.
Reply:my white staffy is 7month he bites his paws scratches all the time has just finished antibiotics for a ear infection he also moults a lot. the vet recommended i change his food to hypoallergenic food to try and help his moulting and to stop him itching. Ive started feeding him with James well-beloved lamb and rice kibble. hopefully in a few weeks he will be a lot better
